Twitter, dated
ratio
Meaning
- A tweet whose replies outnumber its likes and retweets, taken as a sign it went badly.
- (verb) To reply or quote-tweet something so successfully it outperforms the original.
“His hot take got ratioed within ten minutes.”
Where it came from
Twitter users noticed the pattern by March 2017, when a screenshot of a tweet with far more replies than retweets and likes was captioned as the ratio of someone who messed up. An Esquire piece that April gave the theory its widest audience, and “getting ratioed” became shorthand for a tweet that backfired.
